It works really well, and the temperature gauge seems spot on.

I gave this to my husband as a gift to measure temperatures inside the beehive, melting wax, honey etc. Well I never thought that it would become such a toy for him. He brings it out at dinner parties and gives the guest yes or no questions telling he can tell when they're not telling the truth because their body temp goes up. And of course FIDO is kept very happy running all around chasing the beam.

This IR thermometer seems to use similar modules as more expensive brands. It could be a copy or an OEM version of many branded models, its commonly listed as the DT-380 or DT8380 Infrared Thermometer. For $12, its a steal if you know more about how to work it properly, and it works wonderfully.

Very high quality product. Could not be more satisfied with this product and the price. I have zero complaints. Would reccomend.

I tracked a similar looking manual and nearly identical device to a Chinese factory, See comments.

The manual is nearly identical to the model I received. I can't disassemble the unit to check the PCB and makers mark since part of the unit is glued.

IR thermometers are calibrated against dark or black bodies, and perform worst with reflective surfaces like stainless steel, foil, or mirrors. For best results, point to dark to black surfaces.

I tested it as no worse than 10F off, at best 1F, when measuring dark to black bodies, respectively. Its rubber coating makes an easy grip. The trigger has a sharp click, its not soft and gummy. The LCD is easy to see, and the best angle for viewing its LCD is also the best angle for measuring, perpendicular to the measured surface. Beware that when the measured point is fairly close and localized, regional changes in irregular or curves surfaces can happen, like pottery, cups, and mugs.

Using a black mug and pot, I checked IR readings against 32F ice water and 212F boiling water. The temperature was compared against an Agilent thermocouple. The IR reading was 0.5-2F off from the immersed probe. IR reads of a hot Calrod heater was compared against a thermocouple to 900F+, and the IR thermometer read true, far above its rated temperature. It read body temperature 0-2F off compared to a standard oral thermometer!

At extremes changes of ambient temperature, the focusing lens need to acclimatize, the manual recommends 30 minutes. For example, if taken out to a hot summer day of 100F, from 70F air conditioning, the unit may read low. Likewise, from a warm car to the outdoors during winter. This low cost unit uses a Fresnel plastic lens which is prone to thermal deformation more than other lens materials. How much the error is depends on the extent of the difference between one ambient temp and another: if used too soon the IR light may not be optimally focused onto the IR detector.

I am impressed, so I bought another! I've been looking for a good deal on these for years, even Harbor Freight can't match it.

With 2 units now to compare I tested acclimatization, I took one unit to a 73F cold airconditioned room and left one out doors at 85F for 1 hour. Sure, enough, they were off ~3F when they were reading nearly identical earlier. After 1 hour with both units in the same room, they were off from 0-0.5F, awesome!

Had this for about a week now, and it works well. Temporal response ~1sec. Digits settle quickly, with 0.1'F differential resolution (not accuracy) which is very handy for heat leak detection. The narrow 12:1 beam helps too. The red laser spot was co-aligned to the IR field-of-view, despite it not being centered within the package (so trust the spot, not your intuition).

BATTERY DOOR SOLUTION: First slide the door down all the way until it reaches the stops (about 2mm), then raise the back end to open the compartment. I have done this a number of times to confirm that it does indeed open and close repeatedly - no duct tape required!

After reading reviews of various IR thermometers I ordered the Kintrex model IRT0412, it has performed perfectly and met all of my needs. I would recommend this to friends and family alike.

It's easy enough to use, and probably accurate, but don't EVER drop it...not even in the case. The display broke on mine while trying to get the battery cover off, which is not the greatest design. I guess I must have gripped it too much. If it can't take that, I sure wouldn't let it hit the ground. The laser works great for cats though...

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that the absolute temperature may be off by a few degrees, but it seems fine for telling the relative temperature difference in two different places. A great use is pointing it at ceiling air conditioning grilles and the air conditioning return grille. The difference gives a quick indication of how your A/C unit is working, and you don't have to climb up a ladder and wait for a reading, as you would with an old bulb thermometer. Check your soup temperature without having to find a clean thermometer. Compare temperatures of exterior walls to see where insulation is needed.

This is one of those things that you didn't know that you needed until you had it. I have used it in my RV to check tire temperatures at rest stops on long trips, to check and control frying oil temperatures at home, heater and air conditioner outlet air temperatures, etc.

This thermometer does not only appear to be very accurate for around the house stuff but is also fun to platy with. I use it for about anything and everything you can think of including, oven temperature, all around the house room temperatures, AC vent air, freezer and refrigerator . You point it squeeze the trigger and you got it. What a fun and necessary toy

This thermometer is well built and is very easy to use. Just point and click, the reading is instant. I've used it to troubleshoot my HVAC system, measuring the temperature of the air coming out from the registers. I also used it measure draft from doors and windows. Want to know how hot your BBQ grill is, just point and click. How hot is the oil in the pot, just point and click, and no clean up required. Should have bought this ages ago.

This works great as IR (infared) thermometer and as a back up IR imager. You can scan temperature variations over time or over neighboring surfaces. This is not a NIST quality measurement tool, so if you use with that understanding then this will be a great addition for any Green Building professional as well as any home owners that wants to improve home energy efficiency.

This shows where you are wasting electric and since I have a total electric home I need to know where to plug to save my money. I will be sealing more spots after using the leak detector.

This is just for home use, to help battle rising utility bills.

Easy to use, and the color-changing light makes all the difference.

We've been able to precisely address some major leakage and have a much cozier home now.

Now loaning out to others so they can do the same.

This is a nice thing to keep on hand, and we're very glad we got it.

A simple thing like having the led spot light change color makes this fast and easy to use. Aim it at a surface of the wall and turn it on. After that, move it to other areas of that wall and it will alert you to cold or hot spots with a color change projected on that area. So in the basement, some of the areas between the joists, at the sill and at the band joist are letting some cold air in. Most are good due to some sealing work I did in the past, but I now see a few need more work. The good ones are green and the ones that need work are lighting up blue. In the future, I will use it in the attic to locate areas that could use some spray foam. You can set it for 1 degree, 5 degrees or a 10 degree change to trigger a color change. This tool is accurate with respect to where the spot is projected and the temperature being taken at that same spot. An easy tool to use and can help save a lot of money by reducing future utility bills.

For the price, this leak detector is an excellent tool for a DIYer looking to improve insulation in their house.

The device is basically an infrared thermometer. The difference with the leak detector is that it compares temperatures, and lights up the wall in different colors based on the comparison.

Here's how it works:
1 - point the detector at a wall that you know is insulated, and turn on the detector
2- upon turning on, the detector measures the temperature of the wall, and remembers that temperature
3- now you move around the room/house, pointing at different parts of the wall, near windows, doors, etc.
4- the detector constantly reads temperature and compares to that initial wall reading
5- A green colored spot is projected onto the wall where you are pointing the detector.... if the temperature differs by a certain amount, the spot turns blue (colder) or red (hotter).
6- a 3-position switch lets you decide whether you want the spot to change color for 1 degree F difference, 5 degrees F difference, or 10 degrees F.

This detector did not just point out the obvious problem spots (like door jams, near windows). You really don't need a detector to figure out those spots. This detector highlighted large differences on the *same wall,* where it turned out that insulation was lacking or had fallen off.

I deducted one star for the accuracy of the temperature reading. I have another infrared thermometer which I know to be accurate, so I compared readings. This leak detector was a few degrees off from the other detector. That said, this leak detector still calculated the correct difference in temperature, which is its main functionality. If you want a very accurate temperature reading, get a dedicated thermometer.

Others have commented on the box size - it seemed pretty appropriately packaged to me. The detector is a rather odd shape, so the box had a fair amount of empty spaces. Nevertheless, the device is packaged well.

Build quality is fine. The whole device is plastic, with a battery door that pops open in the grip. For the price, I have zero complaints with build quality.

In summary, this device is handy and serves its intended purpose very well.
